My New Bike

This morning started off extra early with a quick 3 mile treadmill run before getting ready to go out of town to visit the BFF. I felt really tired and sluggish the first 2 or 3 minutes of my run and I almost decided maybe today should be a rest day, but I convinced myself to just give it a full 5 minutes. At the 5 minute mark I decided I could do 5 more … after 10 minutes I was in the groove and felt great.

I ended up running negative splits and finishing my 3 miles in 25:35. An 8:11 average pace!

On the way to Birmingham we stopped to look at a road bike that we found on Craigslist. I’ve been wanting one for a while, but I thought for sure that I’d have to wait until my birthday in November. Hubby decided Mother’s Day was a good gift giving opportunity and bought it for me!

One more thing I can mark off my 101 in 1001 list.

We ended up not being able to go visit the BFF after all because her son was extremely sick and up all night. I was really sad, but Tim and I decided we’d biking instead.

I’ve never really been extremely comfortable on a bike. I hadn’t ridden once since I was probably 10 years old until late last year. It took me several minutes to even get going on the bike. The bike came with clipless pedals but I decided I’d wait until I was more comfortable just riding the bike with my regular shoes before attempting to tackle that.

We rode 5.34 miles in 27:47.

I felt much more comfortable at that point and decided to give the clipless pedals a try.

I practiced putting one foot in and out several time and went I thought I had that down I tried to ride. Unfortunately it ended like this …

I’m definitely not cute when I cry.

I got one foot in, tried to push off, lost my balance and couldn’t get my foot unclipped before I hit the pavement. Of course Tim was ready with the camera, like any good blogger hubby.

My wrist started swelling and hurting really bad so Tim convinced me to go get an xray to make sure my hand/wrist weren’t broken and to have my wounds cleaned up.

Thankfully my wrist is not broken, just a bad sprain. Hopefully next time will go a little more smoothly. Perhaps I’ll practice in the grass next time.

Hubby and I decided to go out for Thai food tonight. A little Tom Kha soup and Tofu Pad Thai can make anything better.

I wasn’t impressed with their wine selection (only 1 kind!) or the amount in the glass, until I found out it was free.

I had 3 “glasses”.

Time for bed. Its been a long rough day. I’m planning on a long (and hopefully not rough) run tomorrow morning and then Mother’s Day festivities the rest of the day.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mommies out there!

  1. Ouch! Hope you feel better soon.
I have the clipped in pedals and have had several stacks. Being bigger I seem to bounce a bit though. 🙂 I LOVE LOVE LOVE my bike though and ride at least 5 days a week! I hope you get back on soon and enjoy it. It truly is an amazing sport!

  2. congrats on your new bike! sorry to hear about your spill – glad you didn’t break anything! don’t feel bad about falling, it happens to pretty much everyone – they are definitely hard to get used to. i fell off once just waiting for a light to change – one foot was clipped in and i lost my balance…over i went! fortunately only my pride was hurt. anyway, what a great mother’s day present! do i see a triathlon in your future, perhaps?
